Overview

Filtration is what keeps pool water clear, safe and stable. A system that is undersized, or bolted on after the shell is built, is the most common reason a pool is hard to maintain: the water does not turn over fast enough, the plant room is cramped and awkward to service, and the pipework fights the pool’s fittings. PBJ Infra designs the circulation and filtration plant as part of the pool, from the turnover calculation outward.

PBJ’s approach

The starting point is turnover — how long the system takes to filter the whole pool volume once. That sets pump and filter size. From there PBJ specifies the filter media, the dosing strategy and any supplementary treatment (salt chlorination, UV or ozone), and lays out a plant room that is genuinely serviceable. Because the same team builds the shell, the pool’s inlets, skimmers, drains and the plant-room location are all decided together.

Technical considerations

• Turnover time: matched to the pool type — a residential pool, a heavily used commercial pool and a children’s pool each need different turnover rates.
• Filter media: glass media generally filters finer and backwashes with less water than traditional sand; cartridge suits smaller pools with no backwash line.
• Dosing: automatic dosing with a controller holds water chemistry steadier than manual dosing and reduces chemical use over a season.
• Hydraulics: pipe sizing and valve layout are designed to keep pump energy — and running cost — down.
