Why Pool Filtration Should Be Designed With the Pool

Filtration is what keeps pool water clear, safe and stable. When it’s wrong, you feel it for years: the water is hard to keep clear, the plant room is cramped and awkward to service, and the pipework fights the pool’s fittings.

The most common cause is simple — the system was undersized, or bolted on after the shell was built.

Start with turnover

Turnover is how long the system takes to filter the whole pool volume once. It sets the pump and filter size, and it is not the same for every pool:

• a residential pool,
• a heavily used commercial pool, and
• a children’s pool

each need a different turnover rate. Getting this calculation right at the start is the single most important step, because everything else follows from it.

Filter media

• Glass media generally filters finer and backwashes with less water than traditional sand.
• Cartridge filters suit smaller pools that don’t have a backwash line.

The right choice depends on the pool’s size, its use and where it is being built.

Dosing and treatment

Automatic dosing with a controller holds water chemistry steadier than manual dosing, and reduces chemical use over a season. Supplementary treatment — salt chlorination, UV or ozone — can be added where it suits the pool and the owner.

Hydraulics and the plant room

Pipe sizing and valve layout decide how hard the pump has to work, and therefore the running cost. And the plant room should be genuinely serviceable: enough space to reach the equipment, a sensible location relative to the pool, and pipework that isn’t an afterthought.

Why it should be decided with the shell

Inlets, skimmers, drains and the plant-room location are all decided together with the pool structure. When the same team builds the shell and designs the filtration, those decisions are made once, on one set of drawings, instead of being negotiated between contractors after the concrete is poured.
