Overview
The tile is the part of a pool people actually touch and look at every day, and it is also the part that most exposes shortcuts in everything underneath it. Tiles laid on a substrate that was not prepared, or over waterproofing that was an afterthought, lift and craze within a few seasons. Because PBJ Infra’s own team builds the shell and then tiles it, the substrate is flat and sound, the waterproofing and the tile adhesive are chosen to work together, and the setting-out for mosaics around steps, benches and infinity edges is planned from the 3D model.
This service covers the finishing stage of a PBJ pool build, and tiling or re-tiling work on existing pools where the shell is sound.
PBJ’s approach
Tiling happens after the structural shell and filtration are complete and the pool has held water. The substrate is checked and prepared, waterproofing is confirmed, and the tile is laid to a setting-out plan rather than started from a corner and adjusted at the end. Glass mosaic — the finish that best follows curves — gets particular attention on infinity edges, steps and lagoon shapes.
Technical considerations
- Full shell vs waterline band: a fully tiled shell is the most durable and colour-stable finish; a waterline band over plaster is a lower-cost route with a shorter finish life.
- Glass vs ceramic mosaic: glass gives richer colour and follows tight curves; ceramic is more forgiving to lay and lower cost.
- Slip resistance: deck and step tiles are specified for wet-area grip, not chosen on looks alone.
- Grout and movement: the right grout and movement joints stop a large tiled surface from cracking as it expands and contracts.
